Two massive earthquakes have struck central Türkiye and northern Syria. The disaster has already claimed thousands of lives, caused widespread destruction of homes and has left survivors in freezing conditions in urgent need of humanitarian aid and support.

Five days since the earthquake struck, at least 36,000 people have died in both Syria and Türkiye, with that number expected to rise as rescuers continue to search through the rubble for survivors.
It is estimated that 6 million people have been affected in northern Syria, with almost 300,000 people now homeless. ACT Alliance, our partner on the ground, are continuing to distribute urgently needed winterisation kits, ready to eat meals, food kits, hygiene and dignity kits, and medical supplies to hospitals and shelters. They are also providing rapid mental health and psychosocial support.
In the coming weeks our partners will be working on damage assessments, as well as support for unaccompanied children and people living with chronic illnesses.
A 7.8 magnitude earthquake followed by a 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck central Türkiye near the city of Gaziantep, causing widespread building collapses in southeast Türkiye and northern Syria.
More than 4,300 people have been confirmed dead already, but that number is expected to rise significantly as rescuers desperately search through the rubble for survivors.
Many people in northern Syria were already displaced by the war and struggling to survive through economic collapse. Now the earthquake has killed loved ones and left them homeless in the middle of a brutal winter. They are in urgent need of blankets, shelter, food, and medical care.
The situation is dire, with the Syrian healthcare system overwhelmed and unable to cope with the scale of the disaster. More than 3,000 people are reported to be without shelter in Syrian city of Aleppo alone. And heavy storms are approaching, bringing extreme cold, with temperatures dropping to -2 degrees at night.
