6 ways to Act for Peace this Christmas

With the current state of affairs, there is plenty to feel overwhelmed about – the wars, political instability, global hunger, climate change and an unprecedented humanitarian displacement crisis. But sometimes one of the most empowering things to do when things feel overwhelming (perhaps the only real thing we can do) is to focus on the small steps we can take and the opportunities within our reach to make a difference.

According to Act for Peace CEO, Elijah Buol OAM, the Christmas season provides an opportunity to reflect and take action.

“2024 has certainly had its fair share of heartbreak,” says Elijah. “As we reflect on the ongoing conflict in the Middle East as well as countless disasters and other conflicts, it is natural to feel helpless.”

“But the world needs us to act for peace this Christmas. We can all take small actions that will make a tangible difference in the lives of displaced people.”

Here are 6 ways you can act for peace this Christmas

1. Find pockets of peace in your day

When you’re feeling overwhelmed, try these tips to find some pockets of peace in your day.

  • Breathing and meditation exercises. The benefits of slowing down your breathing and practicing some mindful meditation are endless! There are plenty of simple apps with guided meditations to turn your day from chaos to calm.
  • Get some fresh air in your lungs. Moving your body is a great way to cultivate calm and get the endorphins flowing. A good walk around the block can help to shift your perspective. Bonus points if you can get out in nature!
  • Ditch the tech – do some baking, spend time with the kids. Even if it’s just for a few hours before bed, turn the notifications off your phone and pick up a book for some good, old-fashioned escapism. Lose yourself in a story before you drift off to sleep and your mind will thank you.

2. Turn your Christmas party into an act for peace in the world.

There’s a lot of excess during the festive season so why not turn your Christmas party into a gift of peace for people displaced by conflict and disaster. Create a corporate celebration with meaning by collecting for or donating to the Christmas Bowl to raise funds for life changing programs that help people who are displaced to rebuild their lives.

3. Make your Christmas shopping an act for peace

Stuck on what to buy that friend who has everything? Can’t bear to buy another token pair of socks or chocolates for your uncle?

Gifts for Peace are a meaningful way to offer hope, spread joy, and embrace the spirit of Christmas. More here about what they are.

Order by 9 December for the best chance of receiving your gift cards in the post in time for Christmas. Beautiful e-cards can also be sent directly to the inbox of your loved ones.

4. Fundraise for peace your way

Make your Christmas celebration or personal challenge an act for peace in the world. Whether it’s a fitness goal or special event, get festively creative and turn your occasion into a fundraiser into an Act for Peace. We have ideas for everyone – from running and planks for those who like a fit challenge, to hosting a Christmas gathering, to baking for the foodies – pick an activity or create your own.

5. Give the gift of peace all year round.

Becoming a regular monthly supporter has a long-term impact on the lives of people experiencing displacement around the world. Make the new year, the year you commit to becoming an ongoing Act for Peace partner.

6. Pray for peace

Prayer can be a powerful source of strength and hope. For people of faith, it’s a practice that unifies and guides, seeking wisdom and providing solace. This Christmas, ‘Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances…’ 1 Thessalonians 5:16

This Christmas, by choosing generosity and encouraging other people in our sphere of influence to do the same, together, we can act for peace in the world, reducing division and creating a more compassionate society.

Make your Christmas wish for peace for humankind come true through an act for peace today. Your kind gifts will bring peace to those who need it most.
