Rebuilding after disasters
Philippines
Equipping church and community leaders to respond to climate displacement
In the Philippines we work closely with local communities and organisations to ensure everyone, especially vulnerable groups and people with disabilities, are supported to rebuild their lives after natural disasters.
Act for Peace works with our local partner, National Council of Churches in the Philippines (NCCP), to go beyond providing emergency relief, to help communities prepare for disasters through awareness-raising, capacity-building, service provision and advocacy.
The program recognises that churches and communities are best placed to identify the risks of displacement and have the skills to reduce those risks and respond to climate displacement. Regional Ecumenical Councils (RECs) are equipped in disaster risk reduction through the program so they can assess the context and risk of communities who are vulnerable to displacement.
Act for Peace is committed to backing local organisations and working alongside communities to shape displacement solutions together.
Building disaster-resilient communities in the Philippines
National Council of Churches in the Philippines (NCCP)
Climate change is a key driver of displacement for our Pacific and Southeast Asian neighbours. Rising sea levels and increasingly frequent typhoons and other extreme weather events are forcing people to flee their homes more than ever before. The World Bank predicts that 49 million people in East Asia and the Pacific will be forced to flee their homes due to climate impacts by 2050.
National Council of Churches in the Philippines (NCCP)
Founded in 1963, the National Council of Churches in the Philippines (NCCP) is an ecumenical fellowship of non-Roman Catholic denominations in the Philippines working for unity in faith and order. NCCP provides the churches opportunities for service in the areas of justice and peace, human dignity and rights, and the integrity of creation.
The NCCP’s faith and vision motivate the organisation to be an ecumenical fellowship of churches and a channel for united witness and common action. The NCCP is committed to solidarity with the people in the struggle for justice, peace and the integrity of creation.
Act for Peace gratefully acknowledges the support of the Australian Government through the Australian NGO Cooperation Program (ANCP).
“We appreciate the solidarity…it’s good that we know our role so that we can bring more meaningful and higher-level partnership in terms of our response to disaster or calamities.”
