Here in Australia, we’ve seen food prices skyrocket due to the ongoing impact of the pandemic, climate disasters, and most recently, the conflict in Ukraine. In communities and countries where people were already facing life-threatening hunger, the global food crisis has pushed them to the breaking point.

As a church, we can play a critical role in helping people through this crisis. That’s why together with Michal Australia and other leading Australian international development agencies, we are launching Help Fight Famine: a unified call from the Australian Church, community, and humanitarian organisations for urgent action from the Australian Government to do our part in responding.

We can save lives if we act now.

We are inviting your congregation to join with others across Australia, and to call on our government to:

  1. Save lives now through an urgent Famine Prevention Package of $150 million to avert catastrophe in the worst affected hunger hotspots in the Horn of Africa, Afghanistan, Syria and Yemen
  2. Tackle the root causes of the global hunger crisis through investing long term in a targeted Global Food Security Strategy
  3. Strengthen resilience of the Asia Pacific region to climate change, disasters, and economic shocks by increasing Australia’s development assistance.

Micah Australia have produced resources containing everything you need for you and your Church to participate in the campaign and engage your local MP.

Church Resources

The Biblical Call to Help Feed the Hungry

Micah’s Executive Director, Rev Tim Costello, has written this paper to help provide the Biblical and theological foundations behind this campaign. It can assist you with preparing a sermon or just in general communication with your congregation around the campaign.

Campaign Video

You can share this video as part of a weekly service or share it on your church’s social media to help get the message out.

Write a letter

Encourage your congregation to write a letter to their MP, encouraging our government to respond swiftly to the global threat of famine. Micah have provided this template to make it easy to write your letter.

Send an email

You can direct members of your congregation to our website, where they can quickly search for and email their local MP.

Why The Church

Underpinning everything Micah Australia does is the Bible’s call to ‘act justly, love mercy and walk humbly with God.’ (Micah 6:8)

We believe that when the Church exercises its prophetic mandate as a voice for justice, the actions of an entire nation can be changed.

With this in mind, we want to invite you and your church to join the unified call to the Australian Government.
