Helping communities in Vanuatu be disaster ready

Disaster Ready 2.0

The people of Vanuatu are facing more and more natural disasters. Our Disaster Ready program supports churches in Vanuatu to equip communities to respond and recover effectively from natural disasters.

Helping communities prepare for disasters

Climate change is a key driver of displacement for our Pacific neighbours. Rising sea levels and increasingly frequent storms and extreme weather events are forcing people to flee their homes more than ever before.

The World Bank predicts that 49 million people in East Asia and the Pacific will be forced to flee their homes due to climate impacts by 2050. Act for Peace is working with our local partner, Vanuatu Christian Council (VCC) to go beyond providing emergency relief, to help communities prepare for disasters.

Led by Vanuatu Christian Council (VCC) the program collaborates with government agencies, donors, and non-government organisations including the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education, National Disaster Management Office, and local disability advocacy groups.

Act for Peace works closely with local communities and organisations to ensure everyone, especially vulnerable groups and people with disabilities, is supported during disasters.

Act for Peace is committed to backing local organisations and working alongside communities to address climate displacement together.

The program has 5 clear goals:

  1. Ensure safe, inclusive, and accountable shelter for affected populations in 10 communities.
  2. Improve disaster resilience and mental well-being in targeted communities and schools across all provinces.
  3. Increase church capacity for inclusive disaster and climate change programming.
  4. Strengthen church coordination and procedures for disaster preparedness and response, enhancing collaboration with government and other partners.
  5. Build lasting partnerships between churches and government for better communication and collaboration during disasters and climate change adaptation.

Reduced displacement

“When a disaster hits a family and community it causes disorientation in the peoples’ minds. It can also demoralise the people from putting their efforts towards rebuilding because they are uncertain about the climate pattern.”

George Tabi, Disaster Ready Program Manager, VCC

The Vanuatu Christian Vanuatu Council (VCC) was established in 1966 and is an inclusive organisation with seven member churches representing 70 – 80% of the total population of Vanuatu. VCC strives to represent collective understanding and a united voice and is committed to uniting churches and taking the message of the Churches to the Government. VCC works in the community and advocates on issues including social justice, environment, economic development and natural resources.

This program is supported by the Australian Government and implemented through the Australian Humanitarian Partnership (AHP).

Funding is also provided by Church Agencies Network – Disaster Operations (CANDO).

“I was advised I couldn’t return home to my house because of its condition. VCC provided some iron roofing for my house to build a new home for me…when it’s fully completed then I will move there.”
