Preparing for disasters

In a region where climate change constantly impacts livelihoods and futures, we work alongside a local organisation to help communities prepare for, respond to, and recover effectively from disasters.
Helping communities prepare, respond and recover from disasters
Climate change is a key driver of displacement in the Asia-Pacific region. The World Bank predicts that 49 million people in East Asia and the Pacific will be forced to flee their homes due to climate impacts by 2050.
In Indonesia, Act for Peace works with local partner, Yayasan Cita Wadah Swadaya (YCWS Indonesia), to help communities prepare for disasters and ensure they can respond and recover effectively. In the urban region of Makassar, the Community Led Early Action & Resilience (CLEAR) Program strengthens community resilience to prepare and respond to climate impacts through training and technical assistance to develop anticipatory plans led by the community.
CLEAR also supports the community to access alternative livelihoods so community members have reliable sources of income to meet their families’ needs. Act for Peace is committed to reducing displacement in Indonesia by backing local organisations and working alongside communities to shape solutions together.
reduced displacement
“I pray for compassion; to serve vulnerable refugees in Indonesia to give them education, protection and health access so they can live with dignity and health as well as feel safe so they are able to build their better future through education and capacity building activities.”
~Natasha, Senior Program Officer, YCWS Indonesia.
Yayasan Cita Wadah Swadaya (YCWS Indonesia)
YCWS is a faith-based organisation in Indonesia that seeks to transform communities through just and sustainable responses to challenges like famine, poverty, displacement, and disasters.
Established in August 2024 and registered with the Ministry of Law & Human Rights, YCWS is rooted in its name: Yayasan (Foundation), CITA (a just, dignified, and prosperous society), WADAH (collaborative network), and SWADAYA (self-sufficiency).
YCWS operates in four key program areas: refugee and migration, disaster management and response, food security and livelihood, and climate change adaptation. YCWS is committed to building a more equitable future for Indonesians through partnership and collaboration.
Act for Peace gratefully acknowledges the support of the Australian Government through the Australian NGO Cooperation Program (ANCP).
“What I wish [to know] is actually how to adapt to the climate. Thankfully we do gain that knowledge from this program. We can start to change our old habit and be more alert to floods.”
