In recent weeks, the tide of collective action has been rising, with an increasing number of politicians and Australians advocating for the government to do more to end Israel’s brutal blockade of aid and to push for an end to the conflict.
New polling conducted by a collective of Australian aid agencies found 82% of Australians think Israel’s deliberate blocking of aid into Gaza cannot be justified.
Australia signed a joint statement condemning Israel’s blockade of aid, but many believe that response is not strong enough.
pressure on the Australian Government to do more
At a recent event in Canberra, (you can view the presentation here) around 1,000 Australians heard from Dr Mohammed Mustafa who has volunteered at hospitals in Gaza.
ACT Independent Senator, David Pocock, hosted the event and called on the Australian government to do more.
“Only last week, Australia failed to stand alongside the UK, Canada, and France in signing up to a stronger statement threatening concrete action,” said Senator Pocock.
“Instead, it’s been left to medical professionals…to civil society, to concerned citizens…to shoulder the burden of advocating for the people of Gaza.”
Dr Mustafa shared some of the horrific experiences treating innocent women and children in the hospitals.
a turning point in HIstory
“Right now, we are at a precipice in this 75-year conflict. We’re at a moment where this could be the end. Or this could be the start of something beautiful.”
“We’re at a moment in history where people are watching what’s happening in Palestine, and they will judge what we did.”
~ Dr Mohammed Mustafa , volunteer in Gaza
The current situation is catastrophic for the people of Gaza. Only a small number of aid trucks have been able to enter the war-ravaged strip, and desperate scenes have unfolded of starving people trying to secure food for their children.
Australian Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, described Israel’s blockade of aid as an “outrage”.
With all eyes on Gaza, now is the time to speak up and act for peace together.
Contact your MP, urging them to advocate for the Australian government to:
- Increase diplomatic efforts to end Israel’s blockade and allow aid to resume.
- Provide funding for vital medical supplies.
- Support international efforts to plan for an inclusive reconstruction process.
Together, we can be a movement of peace.
