123 million forced to flee and rising

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency recently released its updated global report on how many people have been forced to flee their homes worldwide.

The latest Global Trends Report shows there were 123.2 million people forcibly displaced worldwide at the end of 2024 as a result of persecution, conflict, violence, human rights violations, or events seriously disturbing public order.

That number is made up of:

  • 73.5 million international displaced people
  • 31 million refugees
  • 8.4 million asylum seekers
  • 5.9 million Palestine refugees
  • 5.9 million people in need of international protection.

According to Filippo Grandi, UN High Commissioner for Refugees, peace is central to finding solutions to the displacement crisis.

 he says.

Peace Is the Only Way Forward

“The search for peace must be at the heart of all efforts to find long-lasting solutions for refugees and others forced to flee their homes.”

~ Filippo Grandi, UN High Commissioner for Refugees

Behind Every Number Is a Story

The numbers are shocking. You can view the report online: Global Trends report 2024 | UNHCR

But we must remember – each number represents an individual with a unique story. Everyone’s reason for fleeing their homeland is different – they might be forced from their home by conflict, disaster, or persecution.

“I was born in Gaza and I have been here in Jordan for 20 years. I haven’t been home to Gaza for 16 years due to the difficult security situation.”
