State of Emergency in Vanuatu

A state of emergency has been declared on the island of Ambae in Vanuatu, following the volcanic activity that has affected the island since September last year.

Volcanic ash and acid rain is making the island unliveable.  Thousands of residents have been ordered to evacuate for their own safety, leaving their homes and livelihoods behind.  As Mount Manaro continues to rumble and ash and acid rain fall from the volcano, families from Ambae are overwhelmed by the natural disaster and are unsure what the future holds.

Many of the evacuees are being temporarily resettled on the island of Maewo, where resources are already stretched.  Our partner in Vanuatu, the Vanuatu Christian Council (VCC) will be working through local churches in Maewo to create a safe environment for those who are arriving and to support them during this difficult time.

Please help our island neighbours and help ease the suffering of families from Ambae today.
