Catastrophic flash floods and landslides have devastated communities in northern Nepal, destroying homes, roads, bridges and other vital infrastructure.
People have lost loved ones, homes and livelihoods. Some communities remain cut off, and search and rescue operations are continuing as the full scale of the disaster emerges.

What is happening in Nepal
On 26 August, catastrophic flash flooding struck communities in northern Nepal along the Nepal-China border.
Floodwaters, landslides and debris swept through communities, damaging and destroying homes, roads, bridges and critical infrastructure. Search and rescue efforts are continuing, while damaged roads and communications are making some affected areas difficult to reach.
Thousands of people are believed to need urgent humanitarian assistance, including emergency shelter, food, safe drinking water, hygiene supplies and medical care.
The situation is continuing to evolve, and the full scale of the humanitarian need is still emerging.
Local communities are already responding
In the first hours and days of any emergency, local people are the first to respond.
ACT Alliance members in Nepal are drawing on established local networks, relationships and humanitarian experience to assess needs and support affected communities, working alongside the Government-led response.
These relationships matter. Local organisations know their communities, understand the context and can help ensure support reaches people in ways that respond to what communities themselves say they need.
