Haiti Earthquake Appeal

Christian Aid/ACT Alliance

Remembering the Haiti earthquake - five years later.

This short video by the ACT Alliance takes us back to the devastating earthquake that shook Haiti in 2010, killing over 200,000 people and displacing 1.5 million. ACT members were on the ground providing emergency assistance and continue to work with communities in Haiti today towards sustainable development.

In January 2010, a massive earthquake struck Haiti, causing unprecedented destruction and catastrophic loss of life. Act for Peace responded immediately through project partner Church World Service, providing relief assistance including food, shelter, water and sanitation, psychosocial support, health care and awareness, education and livelihood programs.
Act for Peace responded with emergency support after a catastrophic earthquake crippled Haiti in January 2010. The quake's epicentre was only 16 kilometres from Port-au-Prince, where some one million people live, many of them in sprawling shanty towns and extreme poverty. Around 10 million people live in Haiti, and it is considered the most impoverished country in the western hemisphere.
The quake caused widespread destruction to homes, schools and other buildings, and major damage to water, electricity and road systems. Search and rescue, medical attention, shelter, food, water and sanitation were the immediate priorities in the aftermath of the disaster. Our partners sourced emergency relief items for distribution to more than 15,000 people in eight communities, targeting areas that received little help from other agencies. They provided water and sanitation materials, hygiene kits, shelter, blankets, jerry cans,  food packages and psychosocial treatment for the victims of this tragedy.

The following video, from ACT Alliance member Christian Aid UK, provides further insight into some of the challenges facing the people of Haiti one year later.

More ways to take action

Right now, children are starving to death in South Sudan. Please give an urgent gift today to halt this famine before it kills even more children.

Take the Act for Peace Ration Challenge and eat the same rations as a Syrian refugee during Refugee Week (June 2018). Raise money to support refugees who have lost everything, and challenge perspectives – including your own.

Right now, thousands of innocent people are fleeing Syria every day to protect their families from bloodshed, violence and death. We need your support to provide emergency relief packs to the families fleeing in Syria.
